Fall and Halloween Sight Word BINGO

Who doesn’t love a game of BINGO? In this version, students spell, read, and write their sight words. If they get four in a row, they can scream bingo.

However, you don’t have to limit it to sight words. You can have students write their CVC words or a specific spelling pattern. You can make it festive by adding fun manipulatives like spiders or Halloween erasers.

Create Your Gruffalo

The Gruffalo is a fun story you can read any time of the year. Julia Donaldson’s book is about a mouse that keeps meeting animals that want to eat him. So, the clever mouse creates a mythical creature called the Gruffalo to scare away its enemies until… the mouse meets thee Gruffalo! I like this story because although it is about a scary creature, it is not a scary story, and Gruffalo’s appearance won’t frighten your students.

After you read, have students create their own Gruffalo.

They need construction paper in various colors, scissors, glue, a paper plate, a pencil, and a craft stick. They can glue them on the plate. Last, they use adjectives to describe their monster and can go on a gallery walk or share their monster with the class.

Spooky Subtraction / Fall Subtraction

Here’s an independent or partner math activity. Your students will need a die and a pencil. They roll the die and pick a number sentence in that column to solve. They continue to play until they reach the top.

Partner version: Students take turns rolling the die and solving number sentences. The first person to get to the top of a column wins.

Halloween and Fall Word Problems

My students are working on solving word problems using multiple strategies. These fall or Halloween word problems are perfect application practice.

The words are simple enough to read by themselves or rely on the pictures to help them. They have to solve the problems using a ten frame, picture, or number line. They also have to write a number sentence and complete a statement.

You can buy a bundle of season word problems here.

If you are still social distancing or teaching virtual, take a look at these digital word problems made for Google Slides and Seesaw.
