4 Hands-On Activities to Make Sight Word Practice Fun

I’ve compiled a list of four go-to hands-on sight word practice activities. Some students master sight words with relative ease and some students needs additional practice. Students come from diverse educational experiences, so not all students will be able to read the same sight words, even after you taught them. Here are some activities you can use to help and engage students in practicing and spelling their sight words correctly.

These sight word activities are perfect for small group instruction, literacy centers, or morning work. Students will learn their sight words while having fun!

Sight Word Stamps

This is an easy, engaging and fun sight word activity. All you need is a sight word list, stamps, and blank paper. Students pick a sight word card, say the word, and stamp the word. Easy, right? This will help students read and spell their sight words correctly.

Read, Build and Write

Read, Build and Write is one of my kinders favorite activities. Students read the word, build the word using magnetic letters or letter tiles, and write the word. What I love about this activity is that you could use it all year long. All you have to do is switch out the material they use. You could use playdough stamps, colored pencils, or markers. The possibilities are endless!

Sight Word Worksheets

Sometimes you want students to practice sight words daily independently for a few minutes. These sight word worksheets will have students reading, writing, and spelling sight words. What I like about these worksheets is that students get to be creative and write their own sentences using sight words. This isn’t just a trace and write worksheets, but students get to apply what they learn.

Read, Trace, and Write

I use Read, Trace, and Write task cards for my students in small group. Students read the sentence, trace the word with their finger, and build the word. They really like this activity! We use letter tiles since they always use magnetic letters. You can also use play dough or have students write the word using a marker.
